Summertime Fun

The Summer is quickly coming to an end ~ we've had a pretty light schedule of Youth activities, but we've been having fun together still meeting every other Wednesday evening.  It's usually been a more relaxed evening because of meeting at our home.

One of the Youth suggested doing Character Studies for the Summer and we've been enjoying studying and discussing different people each time we meet.  

First it was David & Jonathan  (1 Samuel 20) and their friendship.

Then we talked about Stephen  (Acts 6:8-15; 7:54-60), which led to some good discussion of the Holy Spirit and how He wants to fill us ... but we like to keep our cups full of ourselves ... aka kool aid ....

This week we talked about Ananias and Sapphira   (Acts 5: 1- 11) and had some more great discussion on the Holy Spirit.  

We talked about how we can resist the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51) by not doing what we know is right and ignoring Him.  We can quench the Holy Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19) by continuing in our sin.  We can grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30) by refusing the change from our sinful ways.  We also talked about our bodies being the temple of the Holy Spirit ... and again how He wants to fill us with Himself.

Doing it all for God's glory

We're all busy with Summer activities .... 

but are we doing all those activities for God's glory?  

I wanted to share a song with you that one of our kiddos shared with me today ~ it was a good reminder to me and hope it blesses you today too!

Throughout the year, our prayer has been that God would teach us all more about Himself this year .... that He would stretch us and we would desire to dig in deeper.  We hope that Youth has been a blessing to each of you and your families this year.

Are you stuck in the middle?

“I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm – neither hot nor cold – I am about to spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:15-16, NIV).

Goldilocks was hungry. 

She tasted the porridge from the first bowl.

“This porridge is too hot!” she exclaimed.

So, she tasted the porridge from the second bowl.

“This porridge is too cold,” she said.

So, she tasted the last bowl of porridge.

“Ahhh, this porridge is just right,” she said happily and she ate it all up.

According to Goldilocks, being lukewarm is just right. But what is good for porridge isn’t good for our spiritual lives. Jesus tells us that “because you are lukewarm … I am about to spit you out of my mouth”! That’s strong language. What’s so bad about being “lukewarm”?

Notice how our passage from Revelation 3:15-16 begins: “I know your deeds.”  The focus here is on what we do, because our outward actions reflect the condition of our inner hearts (James 2:17).

It’s easy to see why someone should be “hot”, passionate for God and His word. When Jesus clears the temple, kicking out the money changers and merchants, “His disciples remembered that it is written: ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’” (John 2:17) Jesus demonstrated his zeal by helping the poor, curing the sick, encouraging the discouraged and preaching God’s word to those who had lost hope.

But what about being “cold”? Jesus says that being cold is still better than being lukewarm because of something else Jesus preached against: hypocrisy. It’s hypocritical to be halfheartedly seeking God.

Has your spiritual life felt “lukewarm” lately? Has your relationship with God become routine, or even boring? If so, perhaps it’s time to seek a revitalized relationship with the God who yearns for your passionate commitment.
